The Sage Of Covent Garden

It's been over a decade since Madonna and Jennifer Aniston camouflaged their buns of steel under a pair of embroidered army pant-esque Maharishis, but the fashion label famous for its cool, casual, urban style is still hitting the mark.

Founder, Hardy Belchman's long standing obsession with war (military styling, tribal details) and peace (Maharishi is an Indian title for spiritual leader) is as evident as ever - particularly in the menswear collection. But it's his eco-warrior stance that's caught our eye lately. Alongside the army surplus pieces Maharishi have been customising for the past fifteen years, is an ever-expanding collection bursting at the seams with organic cotton, hemp and recycled sari fabrics. Which, may we add, have been readily snapped up by the mother of all shopping pit-stops Net A Porter . (Pretty handy, if you can't be bothered to schlep to the Maharishi boutique in Covent Garden!)

So, what's in store? Organic cotton t-shirts with cute patterned neck-bows, gun-metal grey hemp trousers made with just the right amount of slouch, pleated smock tops, boy-cut shorts and a mini range comprising a recycled vintage sari top, skirt and jacket trimmed with tiny silver Tibetan bells.

We can't promise they'll deliver any spiritual lessons (unlike the late Maharishi Mahesh Yogi who introduced Transcendental Meditation to the West) but if it's a piece of casual urban foxiness your after, look no further.

Good for you as street wear doesn't often come with such angelic credentials. Even the army surplus range (a permanent feature of Maharishi's mainline collection since it's launch 15 years ago) is reworked and hand-stitched with embroidery in India where each piece is smudged with herbal incense, blessed with spiritual mantras and washed in marigold petals and holy water (Ganga jal) to symbolically cleanse it of it's military associations.

Good for the environment as each season Maharishi push all their fabric suppliers to use organic cottons and hemps. Their continued and increased use of hemp in place of cotton is beneficial to the environment as it uses far less water and agrochemicals than cottons.
