Usually DesignSpy would have little to no interest in trawling through other people's rubbish. Though whilst searching the hive of creative activity that is London, we were fortuitous enough to come across Heath Nash, who's built a business doing just that!
Heath, a trained sculptor and designer extraordinaire from South Africa runs a small business designing, experimenting and selling a variety of ingenious interiors products made from used plastic bottles.
And these talents have certainly got him noticed! Having won the prestigious South Africa creative entrepreneur award, he then went on to become the Elle Decoration South Africa designer of the year to boot.
Based in Cape Town, his company hand-produces a diverse range of products - there are lamp shades made from hand cut plastic flowers, die-cut dividing screens, and our personal favourite - the Bottleball lampshade, which is composed of small recycled yoghurt bottles and plastic yellow coca-cola lids!
But importantly Heath isn't only concerned with the environmental impact of his work but also with the possibilities of educating and involving the local community. Collaborating with the traditional craft-based skills of local residents he has managed to create an ethical company with a truly contemporary sensibility.
